Who we are
We opened Campo Base in 2005 on pastures belonging to the family, with the idea of bringing a small piece of the Himalayas home with us, so that others could experience it.
But Campo Base is also something more: a nomad’s tent for dreamers, mountain lovers, explorers, philosophers of “savoir vivre” and fine food.
L’Himalaya
The connection between the Base Camp and the Himalayas began in the 1980s, when our father, who had just become a mountain guide, visited Nepal for the first time. From there, the trips to the Himalayas followed one another, year after year, first to climb the highest mountains in the world and then to introduce us to an enchanted place. This is how the love for the Himalayas has been handed down to us.
The Tibetan flags and the “chorten” that welcome you, as in a real base camp, speak of those places. It is a tribute to the forces that protect the mountain, a good omen for the success of the climb, certainly a sign of welcome for all our guests.
The uniforms we wear are the traditional clothes of the women who live in those mountains: cheerful and colourful, as if to recall the smiles portrayed in our travel photos that cover the room.
There are fourteen tables plus one: in homage to the Himalayan eight thousand peaks and one dedicated to the Churen Himal, the first peak explored by the Alpine Guides of the Val d’Ayas, which recalls how long-lived the bond with such distant mountains is!
The Terrace
The terrace enjoys a breathtaking panorama, which ranges from the peaks of Monterosa to the Gran Paradiso, passing through the Matterhorn. A 360° perspective to immerse yourself in. On clear days, the windows mirror the mountains and you are literally surrounded by peaks.
It houses ten tables for lunch and ski breaks, comfortable seats to enjoy the sun and to have an aperitif with friends. It is the perfect place during sunny days!
The fireplace
The welcoming internal room is framed by large windows that offer a magnificent view of the mountains and create a continuity with the external space: one has the sensation of being in the midst of nature but well protected and warm. The convivial wooden tables warm the environment, as well as our corner with stove and comfortable sofas to relax or refresh yourself between one track and another. There is also a small travel library, from which to draw and be inspired.
The Services
Breakfast
The Base Camp opens at 8.45 to offer a breakfast of homemade cakes and sandwiches. Find the stove always on: a real base camp on snowy days!
Aperitif
A careful selection of mountain wines, heroic viticulture and small realities make the aperitif moment special. To be enjoyed with a platter of local cold cuts and cheeses.
Lunch
The moment to taste a traditional specialty, recover energy with a plate of fresh pasta, travel with the flavors of Nepalese cuisine or stick to the classics with a nice hamburger.
We can be reached with the ski lifts, both on skis and on foot. For those who climb on foot, the return ticket for the Frachey funicular and the Mandria chairlift can be purchased directly at the Monterosa Ski, Frachey ticket office.
Reservation is recommended by contacting us directly.
